The last of us has come to the end of its first season, adapting the game of the same name, Naughty Dog, in an incredibly accurate way.
On the HBO show, Joel Miller (Pedro Pascal) saved Ellie Williams (Bella Ramsey) by force in the only way he could.
But Joel’s actions in the season one finale will have major consequences for the future of the franchise, at least if the second game is anything. Here is all that The Last of Us Part 2 game tells us.

Show co-creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann spoke to reporters at a virtual press conference ahead of the Season 1 finale, and the couple shared some details about their plans for Season 2.
Addressing the lack of infected that emerges in the first season, Mazin explained that they wanted to “emphasize the power of relationships and try to find meaning in moments of the storyline,” meaning it was compared in the first season to the fewer encounters with the creatures gave game.
“There may be less action than some people wanted because we couldn’t necessarily find meaning for quite a bit of it, could we [there was] Worried it would happen again,” Mazin said.
“After all, you don’t play it, you watch it. And while a lot of people love to watch gameplay, when we show it on TV it needs to be a little more focused and purposeful.”
However, Mazin teased that in Season 2, “it’s entirely possible that there will be a lot more infected later on. And maybe other species.”
He added that the story for Season 2 won’t necessarily be as close to the original game as Season 1 The Last of Us Part I
Mazin shared: “We will present things, but it will be different, like this season was different.
“Sometimes it will be radically different, and sometimes it will be little different, but it will be different. It will be its own thing. It won’t be exactly like the game. It’s going to be the show that Neil and I want to do.”
The last of us ended just like the first game, with Joel killing everyone at the hospital he was taking Ellie to upon learning that the surgery to find a cure for the Cordyceps brain infection would kill her in the process. Joel also lies to Ellie about what happened at the hospital.
The Last of Us Part II Four years after these events, Joel and Ellie play with Tommy and their fellow survivors in Jackson, Wyoming. But things take a dark turn when Joel and Tommy help save a woman named Abby Anderson from a horde of infected.
Joel and Tommy bring Abby to their group made up of former Fireflies members called the Washington Liberation Front (WLF). Abby and her team then attack the brothers, and meanwhile Ellie and her friend Dina go in search of them.
It is revealed that Abby is the daughter of the doctor Joel killed to save Ellie all those years ago and she kills him to get revenge.
Ellie watches as Joel is murdered and his death prompts her to try to avenge him, and she embarks on a journey across America to find and kill Abby.
Whether Joel’s death or Ellie’s journey will be portrayed in Season 2 of the show the same way it is in the game remains to be seen. Given Mazin’s comment that some things will be “radically different” on the show than in the game, fans will just have to wait and see.
