The crownThe cast of Prince William and Kate Middleton in the upcoming series has garnered praise from the royal couple’s former university.
Stars Ed McVey and Meg Bellamy were spotted filming Season 6 of the award-winning Netflix show at St Andrew’s University.
A clip of one of her scenes went viral after it was shared on TikTok by a current student, who wrote, “The casting directors were spot on.”
The footage, which has been liked more than 40,000 times and viewed more than 475,000 times, was captioned: “Look The crown be filmed on my university campus.”
However, one comment suggested the casting may have been better when it came to one royal than the other: “Kate doesn’t look like Kate but William is spot on.”
Season 6 of the show – expected to be its last – will feature the death of Princess Diana in a car crash in Paris in 1997 and the ensuing period of royal mourning.
It will also show Prince William growing up and meeting Kate at St Andrew’s University where their romance blossomed.
William famously fell in love with Kate after spotting her on the catwalk during a student fashion show.
The Prince and Princess of Wales attended a dinner celebrating the university’s 600th anniversary at the Museum of Metropolitan Art in New York City on December 9, 2014, where William delivered a speech about her time there.
He said: “It is a great pleasure for Catherine and I to be here tonight. I don’t need to tell you all how much St Andrew’s University means to me and Catherine.
“It goes without saying that the education we received there is first class for all of you in this room.”
“It is often said of the students at St. Andrews,” he continued, “that one leaves the university in one of two states: either married or alcoholic.
“Luckily for Catherine and I, we got married. But for those of you who are currently parents of college students, I’ll give you a tip: ask your son or daughter during the holidays if they know what Ma Bells is. If they answer yes, maybe move your wine glass out of reach.”
In May 2021, the couple returned for a visit to the university and days before, the Prince of Wales spoke of his fond memories of their time there.
“I spent four very fortunate and formative years studying at St Andrews,” he told the Church of Scotland General Assembly. “The city and the students left me alone to get on with student life and allowed me to share their freedoms and their pubs.”
