The new drama from Prime Video swarm got people talking, though perhaps not for the reason one might expect.
The psychological horror series follows Dominique Fishback’s Andrea “Dre” Greene, a music fanatic who becomes increasingly obsessed with her favorite singer and makes greater, darker efforts to win her favor.
swarm was created by Donald Glover and Janine Nabers and features a graphic sex scene starring Chloe Bailey (who plays Dre’s sister Marissa) and Damson Idris (Marissa’s boyfriend Khalid) which drew a lot of attention to the show.
The sex scene between Bailey and Idris appears in the first episode of the show within the first few minutes of the show.
In it, Fishback’s Dre watches her sister and boyfriend have sex from the open door, and when Khalid notices her watching, he smiles and nods to her without stopping. Its graphic nature sparked many conversations among viewers online.
While some viewers commented on the scene inappropriately, there were others who shared their thoughts on what they saw on social media. A clip of the scene itself also made the rounds on Twitter.
Regarding the scene shared so far, one person joked: “I open Twitter and the first thing I see is this sex scene from Swarm with Chloe Bailey & Damson Idris.
Other user simply said: “I will think about that Chloe Bailey and Damson Idris sex scene for the rest of my life. I just know it …”
A Twitter user criticized Bailey for choosing to appear in a scene like her wrote: “Where is a mentor of Chloe Bailey pls??? She’s been making terrible decisions lately, she should never have done that sex scene in Swarm, and I won’t even go into her latest collaboration.”
In recent months, the question of whether sex scenes should be included in television and film has become a topic of debate, with some arguing that they need to be removed from the media entirely.
When I think about this debate, one person said in response to the response to the scene in swarm: “Twitter says they will watch swarm now about the chloe bailey sex scene is ironic considering you’ve spent almost a year here complaining that sex scenes in movies and tv were unnecessary.
Amid the conversation surrounding the sex scene, one person praised Bailey for her performance on the show in general, saying, “I love @ChloeBailey’s acting skills, she is talented like what she can’t do #Swarm.”
In an interview, Bailey commented on what it was like filming the sex scene with Idris meeting at SXSW that she was “scared” about filming the intimate moment, but her co-star helped her pull through.
She told the publication, “As open and liberal as I am about my body, I was very scared because I didn’t have that many partners.
“I’m not that – that sexual and open. Damson really made it cozy; you know, there were limited people on the set. It was a closed set.”
“We literally had a bouncy ball between us and you know we made a joke out of it so it took all the jitters out of it. I have to give him a lot of credit as a man and as a woman I’m literally comfortable being raw and naked,” she added.
swarm is now available to watch on Prime Video.
